Pills, Persistence, and Progress: How to Stay on Track with Your Meds (and Why It Matters)

Insights from Jo Leidreiter

Welcome, I'm Jo.

Hi there! I’m Jo Leidreiter, a Registered Psychologist with 17+ years of experience helping people navigate the ups, downs, and everything in between of Bipolar Disorder. If you’re looking for someone who truly understands the challenges of bipolar and how to manage them, you’re in the right place.

In my sessions, patients often admit, “I know I should take my meds, but sometimes I just forget,” or “Do I really need this? I feel fine now!” Trust me, you’re not alone. Sticking to a medication routine can feel like a chore, especially when life gets busy, or you start wondering if you even need it anymore. But here’s the truth: staying compliant with your meds isn’t just important—it’s essential.

Let’s talk about why it matters, and more importantly, how to make it easier (and maybe even fun).

Why Meds Matter (Even When You’re Feeling Great)

Medications for bipolar disorder are like the unsung heroes of stability. They’re working behind the scenes to keep your moods balanced, even when you don’t feel them doing their thing.

The problem is, when you’re feeling good, it’s tempting to think, “Maybe I don’t need these anymore.” But stopping or skipping your meds can lead to mood swings, relapses, or even hospitalisation. Studies show that between 40–60% of patients with bipolar disorder are non-compliant with their medication at some point, often due to forgetfulness, side effects, or the belief that they no longer need it. This statistic highlights how common the struggle is—and why it’s crucial to find strategies that work for you.

Consistency Is Key

Taking your medication at the same time every day is not just about keeping up with a routine—it’s about maintaining stability in your brain. Mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and other medications work best when levels in your system are consistent. Skipping doses or taking meds at irregular times can create fluctuations that pull the brain into a mini withdrawal state, which can act as a trigger for mood episodes.

Think of it like a plant that needs water at regular intervals. If you skip a day or overwater the next, the plant struggles. Your brain functions the same way—it thrives on consistency. Set an alarm or use a pill reminder app to help keep things steady.

Tips to Stay on Track

Make It Part of Your Routine:

Take your meds at the same time every day—like brushing your teeth or having your morning coffee. Pairing it with an existing habit makes it easier to remember.

Set Reminders (Yes, Really!):

Even the most organised person can forget. Use alarms, apps, or sticky notes as little nudges. Bonus points if you label your phone reminder with something fun like, “Time to crush it with stability!”

Try a Pill Reminder App:

Apps like Dosecast and Medisafe Pill Reminder are game-changers for keeping you on schedule. These apps not only send you reminders but also track your compliance and provide reports that can be shared with your doctor. Some even include features like refill alerts and medication interaction warnings, making them a powerful tool in your medication routine.

What to Do If You Run Out of a Script:

Life happens, and sometimes you realide too late that you’re out of medication. If you can’t access your GP or psychiatrist quickly, telehealth services like Medmate, Instant Scripts, or Updoc offer fast and accessible options for script refills. These services can save you from skipping doses while ensuring you stay on track with your treatment. Keep them in mind for emergencies!

Keep Your Meds Visible:

Out of sight, out of mind, right? Keep your meds in a spot you see every day, like next to your toothbrush or on your kitchen counter (but safely out of reach if kids are around).

Use a Pill Organiser:

If you’re juggling multiple medications, a pill organiser can be a lifesaver. Plus, there’s something satisfying about seeing a week’s worth of doses ready to go.

Celebrate Small Wins:

Did you take your meds every day this week? Treat yourself! Whether it’s a favorite snack or a Netflix binge, reward yourself for sticking to your routine.

But What If You Forget?

It happens. Missing a dose isn’t the end of the world, but don’t make it a habit. If you forget, don’t double up the next time—just get back on track and make a plan to avoid future slip-ups.

The Bigger Picture

Taking your meds isn’t just about avoiding relapses—it’s about building a life you love. Consistency gives you the stability to focus on what truly matters: your goals, relationships, and happiness.

Medication compliance can feel like a drag, but it’s also an act of self-care. Tools like Dosecast or Medisafe can help keep you on track, and telehealth options can be a lifesaver in a pinch.
