FAQ's

Eligible Australian residents can claim a Medicare rebate of $96.65 per session under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), with up to 10 sessions available annually per calender year.

A referral from a GP or psychiatrist is required before your first session. Medicare rebates are typically processed overnight to your nominated Medicare account, ensuring a seamless experience.

If you prefer not to use a Medicare Mental Health Care Plan or have exhausted your yearly rebates, you may be eligible for private health insurance rebates for therapy sessions. Coverage and eligibility vary across insurance providers, so it’s essential to check directly with your insurer to confirm what mental health services and providers are included in your policy.

If eligible, you can claim rebates directly with your insurance provider. Instant rebates may be available if you’re attending in-person sessions.

Depending on your insurance policy, out-of-pocket costs will vary. Contact your insurer for specific details on coverage amounts and any limits on claims.

All payments are due prior to each session and can be made online or in person.

For Telehealth sessions, a credit card authorisation is required and stored securely for processing.

For international patients seeking therapy at My Bipolar Therapist, please note that all fees are charged in Australian dollars (AUD). To ensure a smooth booking process, prepayment for sessions is required prior to your appointment. This allows us to confirm your booking and provide you with the necessary support, regardless of your location.

Children under the age of 18 years cannot be accepted for treatment.

Available for existing patients only upon request for Section 14 Mental Health Act claims or NDIS/Disability Services Pension. Fees apply.

We do not accept Workcover Australia cases.

48 hours’ notice is required for cancellations, or the full fee will apply. Please call 02 9331 7546 or use our online booking system to reschedule. Credit card pre-authorisation is required to secure bookings and we reserve the right to charge credit cards for breach of this policy.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan, and How Can It Help You?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a valuable tool that allows you to access subsidised psychology sessions, including in-person and online therapy. In addition to Medicare rebates, it provides a structured pathway for addressing your mental health concerns between your GP and psychologist. It includes a summary of your needs and a personalised treatment strategy, helping you and your healthcare team navigate your mental health journey.

With a referral to me as a Registered Psychologist, you’ll be eligible to receive $96.65 back per session from Medicare.

Steps to Access Rebated Psychology Sessions

Following these steps will help you keep track of your MHCP, so you’re always eligible for your rebates:

  1. Initial GP Appointment: Book a consultation with your GP to discuss your mental health concerns. If eligible, they’ll provide you with an MHCP, which includes a referral letter and details for up to six psychology sessions
  2. Your First Sessions: Once you have your MHCP and referral, bring them to your first session with me. These documents enable Medicare rebates for your initial sessions, making it easier to focus on your treatment.
  3. Review After Six Sessions: As you approach your fifth or sixth session, I’ll prepare a brief update on your progress, which will be shared with your GP. At this point, you’ll need a check-in appointment with your GP to assess your progress.
  4. Accessing More Sessions: If more support is beneficial, your GP can extend your MHCP with a referral for an additional four sessions. Be sure to bring this new referral to your psychologist to continue receiving rebates.

We’ll discuss your MHCP together as we start, so I can help you stay on track with any necessary check-ins and re-referrals. This plan keeps your journey clear and well-supported, allowing us to focus on creating positive steps toward your mental well-being.

If you have any questions about MHCPs or the rebate process, please don’t hesitate to ask!
